Q How do I arrange to get my fabric or other materials to be treated by
Firetect?
A Firetect treats material on and
off–site. For instance; On-the bolt material can be shipped to our facility
for treatment. Installed fabrics such as drapes can be dry cleaned or wet
cleaned and flame retarded on or off-site with our specialized equipment.
Decorative wood and fabric is frequently treated on-site such as in restaurants and public areas.
Please send a sample piece for testing before sending your entire fabric
shipment. Q Can all fabrics be flame retarded?
A Most fabrics can be flame retarded but there are exceptions. 100% nylon, acetate and acrylic tend to resist flame retarding. Also, materials coated with Teflon and other chemicals can be problematic. In our vast experience we have found many fabrics, especially foreign produced may have unknown chemicals in them to enhance bulk or texture. These unknowns can cause problems. It is for this reason that Firetect
request test samples, whenever possible, prior to treatment.
Q Does Firetect charge for testing sample materials?
A NO! Firetect does not charge for most testing. If a client provides samples we will treat and test them and communicate the results when finished. If a client requires testing by a certified laboratory Firetect will treat the material and interface with the testing laboratory for a reasonable fee.
Q How long does testing take?
A When Firetect receives the test material it usually will be treated the same or next day. After treatment the sample is allowed to dry and cure for 24 hours before testing.
Q How large of a
sample piece do you need for testing?
A Fabric samples should be at least 2 square feet if possible.
Wood, foam, paper, etc. should be determined by calling Firetect.
Q How
much fabric do you cut away for testing.
A Unless it defaces the item, a 1 yard
sample will be kept for testing and file samples. Please allow for
this deduction of fabric when figuring your fabric order.
Q Will Firetect flame retardant saturant change my fabric?
A Firetect saturants are unique because
in most cases, it does not affect the hand of the fabric or leave hard spots or salt residue. If the fabric contains unknown chemicals there is the possibility of some interaction This is another reason for
testing samples.
Q What proof of flame retarding does Firetect provide?
A Firetect will issue a “Certificate of Flame Retardancy”
which we are licensed to issue by the California State Fire Marshal. Also,
each item will have a tag which includes the date of treatment and the
chemical used.
Q
Do you include the CA State Fire Marshall fee.
A The fee is $15 for each
certificate issued. A copy of which is sent to the California State
Fire Marshal along with a sample of the fabric treated. This fee is added
to your invoice.
Q
Can I flame retard my own fabric?
Refer to your local Fire Marshal for your certification requirements.
Certificates of Flame Retardancy can not be issued by Firetect for items
not treated/tested by Firetect. When flame proofing your items, be
sure to test a small section for color and texture, and effective
application. Follow square footage guidelines to ensure proper coverage.
